Gründer Ely Callaway führte das Unternehmen bis zu seinem Tod im Alter von 82 Jahren (2001). Namensgeber Ely Callaway ließ die Firma Callaway im Jahre 1982 ins Handelsregister eintragen und legte damit den Grundstein einer erfolgreichen Firmengeschichte. Im Jahre 1988 wurde aus der Callaway Hickory Stick USA die Callaway Golf Company. Im folgenden Jahr konnte die Callaway Golf Company ein Umsatz von ca. 10 Mio. US Dollar verbuchen und im Jahre 1991 bereits über 50 Mio. US Dollar. Callaways kometenhafter Aufstieg begann mit der Einführung der Big Bertha Hölzer im Jahre 1991. Ein Jahr später geht Callaway an die Börse und erreicht 133 Mio. US Dollar Umsatz. In den späten 90er Jahren zu Callaways Hochzeiten war der Umsatz bei ca. 900 Millionen Dollar angelangt und ca. 70 % aller Pro spielten derzeit mit einem Callaway Driver. Auch wenn Callaway das führende Unternehmen auf dem Golfmarkt ist, bleibt der damalige Erfolg bis heute unerreicht.
